The Hubble Space Telescope was launched into space in 1990 by NASA and ESA and is in orbit about 600 kilometers above the earth.

Because it goes beyond our atmosphere, it can take sharper images than a ground-based telescope, which has provided many unique photos and contributed to a wealth of new knowledge.

Photos of stars being born, dying and exploding

Hubble has captured the northern lights of Jupiter, stellar explosions and thousands of galaxies.

It has also captured a unique close-up of the Eagle Nebula, 7,000 light-years away, which is a giant cloud of gas and dust where new stars are forming.
