Schwerin / Pasewalk (dpa / mv) - The Schwerin state government has extended financial aid for commuters from Poland, who mainly work in Western Pomerania - but not for so-called out-commuters.

The reason is the "tense corona situation," said the State Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Stefan Rudolph, on Saturday.

This poses great challenges for many companies to maintain local value creation.

If the workers stay in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to continue working in the state, they get 65 euros per day, according to the ministry.

They could use it to pay for accommodation.

In addition, there is 20 euros daily for family members of the day commuters who are also companions in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

This helps the economy in MV.

Polish citizens who have settled on the German side in the course of the Schengen Agreement and work on the Polish side called for similar support at the weekend.

They would have to be given a free corona test, otherwise the Schwerin state government would further limit these cross-border commuters, which were wanted by politicians, was a demand.

Those affected currently have to be tested every four days at their own expense, which costs a large part of the earnings and sometimes even exceeds it, said a spokeswoman for the group.

The ministry has so far not provided any information.

Several thousand Polish citizens have settled on the German side in recent years and saved a number of villages and small towns from desertification.

The basis was the freedom of movement for border traffic.

According to him, commuter grants have so far been approved for 4,323 commuters and 315 dependents.

That corresponds to 4.5 million euros.
