Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen (dpa / lsw) - A 35-year-old man was surprised by the flood on Friday evening on the banks of the Rhine near the Schmugglermeer in Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen (Karlsruhe district).

According to the police, the homeless man, who was up to his waist in the flood, was unable to free himself because of the darkness and called the rescue with his cell phone.

Because his exact location could not be determined at first, several police and fire service vehicles, two boats from the waterway police and a police helicopter were used to search for the man.

Rescue workers from the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) were also on duty.

In the end, the fire brigade was able to save the 35-year-old with a boat.

The man was unharmed.
