MEPs adopted a bill on Friday aimed at combating animal abuse.

Animal defense associations welcome the adoption of this text which should help to regulate the sale of domestic animals, but also to prohibit the presence of animals in circuses, dolphinariums and fur farms.

Almost unanimously, the French deputies adopted, on Friday, measures to fight against animal abuse.

A vote immediately celebrated by animal protection associations.

The legal arsenal emphasizes the responsibility of pet owners, with increased penalties, but also refers to the fate of animals sold in pet stores, that of animals used for entertainment, and those raised for their fur.

If the text in question is voted by the Senate, the owner of a domestic animal will risk up to three years in prison and a fine of 45,000 if he mistreats his animal.

Another form of abuse, dropouts are also concerned by this text.

Each year, 100,000 dogs and cats are abandoned in France.

A scourge that the law wants to put an end to by preventing the impulse purchase of animals.

Online sales reserved for shelters and breeders

Another change: online sales will be reserved for shelters and breeders, and it will no longer be possible to buy dogs or cats from individuals via ad sites like Leboncoin.

From 2024, the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores will also be prohibited.

A ban requested for years by the president of the Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA), Jacques-Charles Fombonne.

"In pet stores, the animal is a product of appeal, we do not care about its future as long as the person comes into the store, buys it and buys something else", he said at the microphone of Europe 1 "This law puts the relationship between man and animal in a completely different perspective," he enthuses.

"We weren't expecting things to go so far and in the right direction."

What news !!!

#StopAnimalObjet is now!

Circuses, dolphinariums, fur farms

For him, this vote will be a milestone.

The more so as the text also looks at the treatment of wild animals by proposing to gradually ban their captivity in traveling circuses and dolphinariums.

Finally, all farms dedicated to fur production will have to close their doors.
