Frankfurt / Main (dpa) - The state of Hesse wants to support the two airports Frankfurt and Kassel with non-repayable millions in aid in the Corona crisis.

The State of Finance supports the line decided jointly with the other federal states to provide the announced federal aid in the same amount, said the Ministry of Finance in Wiesbaden at the request of the dpa news agency.

A federal grant of 138 million euros is planned for the Hessian airports, which would be doubled by the state and other public airport owners.

The federal states agreed in principle to the joint approach on Thursday and must now coordinate further with the Federal Ministry of Finance.

The federal government had announced that it would take over half of an airport aid amounting to one billion euros.

A ministry spokesman said that the distribution between the two airports in Hesse will be decided later.

The airport association ADV has spoken out in favor of using the reserve costs incurred during the first corona lockdown in spring 2020 for keeping the airports open as a benchmark.

In any case, most of the aid, amounting to 276 million euros, is likely to go to the much larger Frankfurt Airport.

The Ministry of Finance did not provide any information on the possible municipal shares in the aid.

The city of Frankfurt also holds shares in the Frankfurt MDax group Fraport.

In the case of Flughafen GmbH Kassel, the city and district of Kassel as well as the municipality of Calden are on board.

The state of Hesse does not see itself as responsible for the ailing Hahn Airport in the neighboring state of Rhineland-Palatinate, in which it still holds 17.5 percent of the shares.

When Fraport AG left, it was agreed that Hessen would not pay for any losses, the ministry said.

The main owner of Hahn Airport, the Chinese conglomerate HNA, filed for bankruptcy on Friday.
