Knabe also led the decisive vote when the federal party was founded in Karlsruhe in 1980.

According to the North Rhine-Westphalian state association of the Greens, the boy died at the age of 97.

Knabe was a founding member of the regional association in 1979 and then became its first regional chairman.

"Then Knabe was also the federal spokesman for the Greens and from 1987 to 1990 a member of the Bundestag."
