A photo from the US presidential installation in Washington on January 20, where the usual butter Bernie Sanders, wearing a mouth guard, down jacket and a pair of sturdy mittens sits on the stand with his hands crossed, has in recent days made the internet go wild.

The gloves, knitted from recycled sweaters and plastic bags, are made by Jen Ellis, a teacher in Sanders' hometown of Vermont - who told American media that after the picture was published, she received thousands of emails from people who want to order similar gloves.

And knitting forums on the internet were soon flooded with patterns on Sanders gloves.

Increase in stinging during the pandemic

And knitting forums on the internet were soon flooded with patterns on Sanders gloves.

The pattern creator and knitter Lotta Lundin, with a background as a graphic designer and layout designer, received direct requests to knit the same.

- Many asked if I could not make a pattern of Bernie's gloves, but I can not copy them.

So instead I have made my own version of them, she tells TT.

The explosive interest in Sanders' brown mittens is not entirely surprising - the interest in knitting increased greatly during the corona pandemic, says Malin Vessby, editor-in-chief of the magazine Hemslöjd.

- We have definitely noticed an increase in knitting throughout the country during the corona.

Online yarn sellers have also reported that their sales have increased significantly over the past year, and yarn wholesalers have had difficulty getting enough materials.
