The Hessian CDU General Secretary Manfred Pentz apologized on Saturday for comments about Friedrich Merz, who had lost the election as federal chairman of the party.

With reference to a report by "Bild" about an internal video conference with the Junge Union Hessen, Pentz stated in a written communication: "It became clear to me that I was wrong in terms of tone and choice of words at this conference."

He regrets this very much.

"Therefore I would like to apologize to Friedrich Merz, to those who voted for him, and to everyone who feels hit because of this choice of words."

According to the newspaper report, Pentz had described the followers of Merz as "Merz jihadists".

The Secretary General said on Saturday that at the conference in preparation for the local election campaign he had also emphasized "that everyone should now help and shape who are important for the success of the Union".
