A group of relatives has gathered outside the hospital in northern Tripoli.

One of them is Hamdy Alaye, whose son hovers between life and death after yesterday's protests.

- They fired sharp shots at him, an 18-year-old who came here with the rest of us.

The leg was torn, he says.

Since Lebanon imposed a curfew around the clock two weeks ago, in an attempt to prevent the spread of the corona virus, violent demonstrations have flared up in several parts of the country. The greatest, however, is the desperation in Tripoli, Lebanon's poorest city. Many are without pay and without help from the authorities. Residents demand a stop to the curfew in order to go out and work.
