Despite the corona pandemic and the ban on staying overnight, just take a detour to a holiday apartment on Sylt?

What is normally currently forbidden, strangers have now indulged in several times on the popular holiday island.

In at least seven cases, they forcibly gained access to Sylt holiday apartments and lived there for several days, as the police announced on Friday.

Furniture and bicycles were also stolen, some of which turned up in the other apartments.

The unknowns were up to mischief in Rantum, Westerland, Wenningstedt, Kampen and List.

In one case, a witness noticed a man around 25 to 30 years old who then fled.

The police asks residents for advice if houses and apartments that are actually unoccupied suddenly appear to be inhabited or if signs of a break in are visible.

This also applies to the other holiday resorts in Schleswig-Holstein, the owners of the properties often live in Hamburg, Berlin or North Rhine-Westphalia and sometimes have no administrators on site who could provide security.

In Germany's northernmost state, there has been a ban on accommodation for months.

Schleswig-Holstein's Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU) presented a step-by-step plan this week, which provides for easing if the incidence falls below certain levels.

For this he received criticism from the CDU in Hamburg, which described it as too hasty and as a wrong signal.

Günther himself warned against exaggerated expectations of such a plan.

It is not about "a calendar" with fixed deadlines.

"Politics cannot and will not meet this demand," said the Prime Minister, referring to the unclear future development.

It is about being “careful” and continuing to “focus” on people's health.

In addition, it is not about short-term steps, emphasized Günther, referring to the current situation.

"It's not an opening strategy, nor is there any talk of easing at the moment," he added.

It is a matter of "giving the citizens of the pandemic a clear direction" and "better explaining" which goals are being worked towards.

A working group was set up on this at the last summit of the federal and state governments.
