Les Sables-d'Olonne (dpa) - circumnavigator Boris Herrmann has contacted the owner of the Spanish fishing trawler with whom he collided at the Vendée Globe.

"I called the ship owner and asked first if everything was okay," said the man from Hamburg in an online press conference on Friday.

«We had a nice chat.

In any case, no accusations on my part. "

They would have "apologized nicely to each other".

Most recently, Herrmann and the captain of the fishing boat had expressed different views on the incident on Wednesday evening 90 nautical miles from the finish of the regatta in Les Sables-d'Olonne.

Captain Josu Zaldumbide had assured the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" that the AIS, through which ships exchange their navigation and ship data, had been switched on with him.

Herrmann had doubted that.

"He is right," said the 39-year-old now.

"In the hurry of the situation, I perceived that as the simplest and most obvious explanation, because I have already seen one or the other fishing boat that did not have AIS on."

Nobody was injured in the momentous collision of Herrmann's yacht “Seaexplorer - Yacht Club de Monaco” with the ship.

The yacht was badly damaged, however.

Herrmann was only able to continue sailing at reduced speed.

As a result, he missed the podium he had hoped for and was fifth on Thursday after more than 80 days and 28,000 nautical miles.
