A bear currently locked in a cage in Italy could be saved by a Romanian association.
The latter, who manages a sanctuary for brown bears rescued from captivity, announced on Thursday her intention to adopt the animal.
"We are ready to open the doors of the sanctuary for this bear who is 20 years old and deserves to spend her last years in freedom", declared Cristina Lapis, president of the association Des Millions Amis (AMP).
The NGO would have been approached by the refuge of Casteller (Italy), where the bear in question lives with two other plantigrades.
6,000 brown bears in Romania
The association's “Libearty” sanctuary is located in Zarnesti (Romania), in the heart of the Carpathians.
It covers 69 hectares and is currently home to 107 bears, up from 80 five years ago.
"We open our doors to special cases," said Cristina Lapis.
The last two bears came from a circus in Ukraine.

The Italian bear will have to wait at least three more months before being able to frolic in the Romanian sanctuary, because the pandemic complicates animal transfers.
The AMP has invested more than two million euros in this reserve, opened in 2005. The site attracts tens of thousands of tourists a year.
Romania has around 6,000 brown bears, or 60% of the European population.
