- In the near future, this area will be a new residential area, says Conny Axelsson who is community construction manager in Lessebo.

But without a redevelopment, where the remnants of the glassworks production have been removed, it would not have been possible to build on the area with housing.

In the ground around the old glassworks there were broken glass and remnants of various heavy metals that were used in glassmaking.

Today, if you visit the place where the glassworks was located, you are met by sand and gravel.

All of the old glassworks is gone, all the way underground.

- For us as a municipality, it would not have been possible to clean up this area unless we received state support, because the land value is not so high, says Conny Axelsson.

"Really worth the money"

The actual redevelopment of the area cost SEK 25 million, close to half of the SEK 47 million it was estimated to cost.

- It was really worth the money, partly because we have to take care of the old environmental sins that exist, but also because this clean-up gives us the opportunity to have new centrally located homes built, says Conny Axelsson.

More glass use areas in Lessebo municipality are in line to be cleaned up from previous glass production.

It is partly about Strömbergshyttan, partly about Bergdala glassworks.
