Les Sables-d'Olonne (dpa) - circumnavigator Boris Herrmann has been proposed for the Federal Cross of Merit for his performance at the Vendée Globe.

The Minister of State in the Foreign Office, Niels Annen (47), has proposed a corresponding application to the Hamburg State Chancellery.

This is to honor Herrmann's “outstanding sporting achievement and at the same time his social concerns”, said the Hamburg SPD member of the Bundestag of the German Press Agency.

First the Hamburger Abendblatt reported on Annen's advance.

The application must now be checked first.

Annen has been a keen sailor herself from childhood.

“That's why I followed the dramatic regatta closely,” he said.

The Hamburger Herrmann finished fifth in the Vendée Globe in Les Sables-d'Olonne.

In the more than 80 days on the world's oceans, the 39-year-old also campaigned for environmental protection.

Born in Oldenburg, he has been committed to fighting climate change and protecting the seas for years.

He tries to get children excited about it and talked to young people from Germany on social media during the regatta.

In addition, on his 28,000 nautical mile voyage from his yacht "Seaexplorer - Yacht Club de Monaco" with an on-board laboratory, he provided extensive data to scientific institutions such as the Geomar Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research in Kiel and the Max Planck Institute.
