Halle (dpa / sa) - The mountain zoo in Halle reopened its doors to visitors on Friday after about a month and a half.

"That is a great relief," said zoo director Dennis Müller shortly after the opening.

When it was snowing, only a few groups of kindergarten children and their supervisors appeared at the beginning.

The zoo's hygiene concept stipulates that a maximum of 600 people may be on the zoo site at the same time.

That was probably a long way off on Friday.

At least the animals seemed to enjoy the variety.

Despite the harsh weather, the penguins splashed happily in their outdoor pool and came quite close to the visitors.

"The number of animals that the visitors missed predominates," explained Müller.

At the time of the closure, the animals had already looked around more when the keepers were nearby.

"They lack variety, and they got bored to a certain extent."

The zoo had previously been closed due to the pandemic since mid-December.

The pet shop and animal houses will remain closed after the current opening.

In addition, a mask is required on the entire site to protect against the corona virus.

A snack bar offers take-away meals.
