Hahn / Beijing (dpa) - The main owner of the Hunsrück airport Hahn is deep in a debt crisis.
As the Chinese conglomerate HNA announced on Friday, debts could no longer be repaid.
Therefore, creditors have filed for bankruptcy proceedings and the realignment of the company at the People's Court in the Chinese province of Hainan.
They wanted to work with the court, it said.
The Hunsrück Hahn Airport is 82.5 percent owned by the Chinese corporation, the remaining 17.5 percent belongs to the state of Hesse.
It is the only major airport in Rhineland-Palatinate.
For the time being, the Hahn management did not comment on request.
The outbreak of the corona pandemic, which hit the aviation industry particularly hard, made it even more difficult for the heavily indebted HNA group to meet its financial obligations.
As early as 2020 there were rumors that the HNA aircraft division Hainan Airlines could be sold to state-owned Chinese airlines.
The group had borrowed heavily worldwide in the past few years with investments in the billions.
At times, HNA even held almost ten percent of the shares in Deutsche Bank, but has withdrawn there again.
