Hanover (dpa / lni) - The Greens in the Lower Saxony state parliament have demanded extensive tests for coronavirus variants such as the British mutation B.1.1.7.

"It is not enough to warn about the highly contagious Corona variants," said health expert Meta Janssen-Kucz on Friday.

"If we want to seriously think about easing plans for the planned long-term plan, we have to do more against the virus mutations at the same time."

It is conceivable that wastewater samples could be tested in all districts with which researchers from Switzerland have already been able to detect the mutation.

In addition, new delta PCR tests from Denmark, which confirm mutations without great effort, could be used more intensively, explained the MP.

The State Health Office had previously announced on Thursday that, unlike Bremen, Lower Saxony had not yet planned any comprehensive tests for the variant.

In addition, for technical reasons, discovered cases are not even recorded centrally.

However, the local health authorities are asked to report the evidence to the state office.

"It is incomprehensible that the state government does not even look extensively for mutations in the previous corona tests," criticized Janssen-Kucz.

"We shouldn't just stand by and watch B.1.1.7 or other variants become the main trigger for corona diseases in Lower Saxony in just a few weeks."

The developments in other countries are warning enough.

The French health minister said on Thursday that more than 2,000 patients are infected with a virus mutation in his country every day.

The British variant is the most widespread.
