In 2018, 13 people were murdered in Malmö.

In 2019, the number had dropped to 8, and in 2020 to 5 murders.

- Five murders are low numbers compared to previous years.

One of the murders has been solved and two more have good forecasts of becoming so in 2021, says Mattias Sigfridsson, deputy chief of police in Malmö.

Information from Encrochat

Why the number of murders has dropped, the police believe has several reasons, including that several people are currently in custody for gun crime and incitement to or preparation for murder.

- Where we believe we have prevented murders and serious violent crimes.

It has been our goal all along - to lock in those responsible for the violence.

We have also received valuable information from Encrochat, the encrypted chat we have taken part in.

It has of course affected our ability to prevent crime, says Mattias Sigfridsson.

He also points to the cooperation between different actors in Malmö.

- It is the city of Malmö, the police, the prison service, the voluntary organizations that have jointly agreed on different methods, for example Stop shooting, says Mattias Sigfridsson.

Unsolved murders

One in five murders from 2020 have been solved.

Two murder investigations are expected in the spring, according to the police, while two murders still have no suspects or detainees.

At the same time, several murders from previous years are still unsolved, including the murder of the mother of small children Karolin Hakim.

- For the murders that took place in 2018 and 2019, our work is still ongoing.

We have not given up hope of them, but it takes time to investigate this type of serious crime, says Mattias Sigfridsson.
