Bayreuth (dpa / lby) - The avian influenza continues to spread in Bavaria.

Cases have now also been detected in a poultry farm in the municipality of Pottenstein in the Bayreuth district, as the district office announced on Friday.

The national reference laboratory at the Friedrich Loeffler Institute has detected the H5N8 virus.

As early as Thursday, all chickens and ducks in the poultry farming concerned were killed and properly disposed of in accordance with the regulations.

In order to prevent the spread of avian influenza to other livestock and domestic animals, a restricted area and an observation area were established around the outbreak farm.

Avian influenza is not considered dangerous for humans.

The animal disease has appeared in Bavaria since November.

Most recently there were cases in the Upper Bavarian district of Starnberg and in the Lower Franconian district of Haßberge.

The infectious disease occurs mainly in water birds.

The highest incidence and death rates are observed in chickens and turkeys - in some cases up to 100 percent.

Avian influenza is a notifiable animal disease and is therefore controlled by the state.
