Markt Schwaben (dpa / lby) - After a massive infection with the coronavirus in a nursing home in Markt Schwaben in Upper Bavaria, 19 residents died of or with the virus.

A total of 63 residents and 24 employees of the home in the Ebersberg district had been positive for the corona virus since the beginning of January, as a spokeswoman for the district office confirmed on Friday.

Currently 13 residents and 13 employees are still actively infected.

How it came to the outbreak in the home is currently unclear, said the spokeswoman.

One explanation could be that there are very many people with dementia who are not able to observe hygiene measures.

Shortly before the outbreak, employees of the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL) did not discover any serious violations when inspecting the home.

According to the district office spokeswoman, the nursing home in Markt Schwaben has 89 places for residents.

Because of the infection at the beginning of January, the first vaccination against the coronavirus was only carried out about a week ago.

The Bavarian Ministry of Health recently announced that around half of the people who died of or with a corona infection in the Free State lived in old people's or nursing homes.

Corona outbreaks in old people's homes are particularly serious because most people there have previous illnesses and the virus can spread quickly.

Critics accuse the state government of having done too little to protect the elderly.

Health Minister Klaus Holetschek (CSU) recently described the situation in old people's and nursing homes as a “key issue”.

The largest and most serious outbreaks were recorded there.

Several media had previously reported on the corona outbreak in the nursing home in Markt Schwaben.
