The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) is still concerned about the coronavirus variants that also occur in Germany.

"More and more cases and outbreaks are being reported," said RKI President Lothar Wieler on Friday in Berlin.

The properties of the corona mutants are not yet fully known.

It is unclear whether previously infected people or those who have been vaccinated can be infected by the new variants that first appeared in Great Britain, South Africa and Brazil.

It can be assumed that it would lead to more cases in a short time if the even more contagious variants were to spread.

“We have to prevent that,” said Wieler.

A new strong increase in the number of cases would bring the clinics to the limit.

According to the Federal Ministry of Health, the virus mutants have so far been detected 150 times in Germany.

Overall, Germany is "on the right track" in combating the spread of the coronavirus, said Wieler.

This must now be followed consistently.

The seven-day incidence is falling, especially in the particularly hard-hit federal states.

"Overall, too many people are still infected," warned Wieler at the same time.

He once again urged people to stick to the rules and avoid contacts and travel so as not to give the virus the opportunity to spread.

"Let's continue to stick to this plan."
