Himmelkron (dpa / lby) - Almost like Cinderella, only the search for a shoplifter, whom investigators from Upper Franconia discovered through his used shoes, was not quite as romantic.

The man had put them in a shop in a shoe box and took the original shoes, the police said on Thursday.

The theft in a shop in Himmelkron (Kulmbach district) took place in July last year.

The investigators kept the shoes they had worn and secured traces of DNA.

After an evaluation at the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office it was clear: The shoplifter is a 37-year-old with a relevant criminal record, presumably also due to criminal offenses in Romania and Spain.

He is now being searched for across Europe - handcuffs await him instead of a kiss.
