China News Agency, Beijing, January 28. Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing on the 27th with a video meeting with the co-chairs of the 75th UN General Assembly Security Council Reforming the Intergovernmental Negotiation Mechanism, Veronica, Permanent Representative of Poland to the United Nations, and Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations On behalf of Alsani.

Wang Yi congratulated Veroneka and Alsani on serving as co-chairs of the negotiation mechanism and said that China will fully support the work of the co-chairs.

Wang Yi said that the reform of the Security Council bears on the future development of the United Nations and the vital interests of the general membership.

Reforms should reflect fairness and justice, increase the representation and voice of developing countries, allow more small and medium-sized countries to participate in the decision-making of the Security Council, and correct historical injustices to Africa.

Reforms must follow the principles of the rule of law and maintain intergovernmental negotiations, the only legal platform authorized by the General Assembly to discuss security reform issues.

Reform should reflect the leadership of member states, adhere to extensive democratic consultations, gradually accumulate consensus, and find a "package" solution acceptable to all parties.

Reforms must remain stable and orderly, effectively safeguard the unity of member states, and safeguard the prestige of the United Nations.

Veroneca and Alsani appreciated China’s efforts to safeguard multilateralism and strengthen the role of the United Nations. They introduced the first negotiations between the UN General Assembly and reform governments. They said they would continue to listen to the opinions of member states and discuss with all members including China. States maintain close communication, strive to build consensus, and promote the reform of the Security Council in a manner that best suits the interests of the majority of member states.
