Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The correctional facilities in North Rhine-Westphalia are to be equipped with thousands of corona rapid tests.

A Justice Department spokesman said they were intended for both detainees and employees.

From February onwards, around 7,000 tests per month are expected nationwide.

How they are used depends on the individual prison administration.

There is no uniform test specification.

According to the ministry, for example, rapid tests are a good idea before prisoners are transferred to another facility.

In Cologne JVA Ossendorf there was last excitement after 21 rapid tests showed corona infections among employees - but there were no.

This was then found out through so-called PCR tests, which were evaluated in the laboratory.

It is still unclear why the rapid tests carried out on 70 colleagues in 21 cases, although the employees were healthy.

So far, there have only been a few confirmed corona cases in the penal system in NRW.

According to the Justice Department, 157 inmates had tested positive for Covid-19 by December 31.

In addition, 213 employees.
