The suicide of a second officer involved in repelling the Trump supporters' attack on the Capitol Building

A second police officer, who was among the officers who repelled the President's race to attack the Capitol on January 6, died of suicide, according to the Washington DC Police Chief.

Police Chief Robert Conte identified the officer as Jeffrey Smith, who said he was injured while trying to help contain a crowd of supporters of former President Trump who are trying to prevent Congress from certifying President Biden's election victory, according to the American newspaper "thehill".

"This was a very unfortunate and tragic situation for us," Conte said during a press conference on Wednesday.

Conte said that Smith was apparently on his way to work when he committed suicide.

He confirmed that the Metropolitan Police had taken over the investigation into Smith's death.

Howard Liebengood, a Capitol police officer, committed suicide after he was on duty at the Capitol on January 6.

In testimony on Tuesday to the House Appropriations Committee, which also revealed Smith's death, Conte said that at least 65 police officers had filed reports after being wounded while repelling the attack.

He pointed out that "a greater number" of the officers suffered scrapes, bruises and burns, but they did not submit reports to document their injuries.
