A Libyan source confirmed the kidnapping of 38 Egyptian citizens in the vicinity of Bani Walid in western Libya, noting that criminal gangs are holding them on a farm near the Libyan capital, Tripoli, and are demanding a ransom for their release.

The Libyan source told the Egyptian newspaper Al-Youm Al-Sabea that the kidnapped Egyptian citizens entered Libya illegally, stressing that they came from the Qena governorate in the far upper part of Egypt.

The source indicated that the criminal gangs that are active in illegal immigration are taking advantage of the current situation in Libya by practicing kidnapping and extortion of foreign workers who enter the Libyan lands illegally.

According to an audio recording of a criminal gang member, he is bargaining with the detainees' families to obtain a ransom of 15,000 Libyan dinars for each individual in exchange for their release.
