Berlin (dpa) - After the verdict on the murder of CDU politician Walter Lübcke, the President of the Bundestag, Wolfgang Schäuble, called for a decisive opposition to hatred and agitation.

"First there are words, and in the end there are acts against minorities or against people who take responsibility like Walter Lübcke," said the CDU politician on Donnerstabend in a ZDF "special".

Hate, agitation and discrimination against minorities could quickly turn into serious acts of violence.

Security organs and all citizens must act against this with determination.

«We mustn't be afraid.

That applies to politicians, but it also applies to every citizen, ”warned Schäuble.

You have to defend yourself against the beginnings and prevent agitation in social media earlier and more decisively.

"Even freedom on the Internet cannot serve to undermine freedom," emphasized the President of the Bundestag.

The commemoration of the victims of National Socialism on Wednesday showed that one can learn from stories to defend against the beginnings.

"And the danger is great enough," added Schäuble warningly.

The Frankfurt Higher Regional Court sentenced 47-year-old Stephan Ernst to life imprisonment for the murder of CDU politician Walter Lübcke.

The court determined the particular gravity of the guilt.

This means that a release from prison after 15 years is as good as impossible.

The court regards it as proven that Ernst shot the North Hessian district president on his terrace in the Kassel district on the night of June 2, 2019.

He killed Lübcke because of his liberal stance on refugee policy.

In 2015, the politician defended the admission of refugees in Ernst's presence.
