Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The German Red Cross (DRK) has called on the people in North Rhine-Westphalia to be restrained in donating clothing because of full containers and warehouses.

Many people used the corona lockdown to clean out.

The DRK announced that old clothes were being brought to the collection points in bags.

"Due to the closure of the clothes shops and closets, these old clothes cannot be passed on."

Even before the pandemic, the containers were often well used, and the winter lockdown worsened the situation in many places.

The donations are basically sensible and necessary.

But the current oversupply leads to overcrowded warehouses.

In addition, the old clothes are often parked in front of the containers, as they are already full.

"If the clothes are soaked, they are mostly useless for us," said the chairman of the DRK regional association Westphalia-Lippe, Hasan Sürgit.

In addition, not only textiles are sometimes filled into the containers, which can lead to problems.

Examples include paint buckets, paint residues, electronic devices, rubbish or old towels.
