  • The subject of paid parking for two-wheelers in Paris comes up regularly in the debates.

  • The mayor of the 9th arrondissement, Delphine Bürkli, wants to set up an experiment in paid parking for two wheels in her arrondissement.

  • The subject will be discussed at the next Paris Council which opens on Tuesday.

It is one of the capital's sea serpents: Paid parking for two-wheelers in Paris, as is already the case in Charenton-le-Pont and Vincennes (Val-de-Marne).

In recent months, the project has been in the works and regularly mentioned by elected officials.

“Anne Hidalgo and I, during the electoral campaign, we declared in favor of paying parking for motorized two-wheelers.

For the moment, we are working, nothing has yet been arbitrated.

Things will settle at the beginning of next year, ”said the Parisian in December 2020, David Belliard, the deputy mayor (EELV) in charge of transport.

But things are accelerating and an experiment is now on the table.

Delphine Bürkli, mayor of the 9th arrondissement, will present next week to the Council of Paris, a wish relating to the implementation of an experiment in paid parking for thermal and electric motorized two-wheelers in the 9th arrondissement.

It is for her and her group in the Council of Paris (Independents and Progressives - elected from the presidential majority) a "question of common sense" and "fairness".

"It is a measure of common sense and of regulation of public space"

"It is an experiment which consists in making paying the parking of motorized, thermal and electric two-wheelers and that this experiment be carried out in consultation with the main actors concerned, inhabitants, users and associations of motorcyclists", notes the mayor of the 9th district which considers in particular that "the authorization given by the city to motorized two-wheelers to park for free on the 800,000 existing paid parking spaces, deprives it of substantial revenue".

At the same time, Delphine Bürkli deplores "the explosion of complaints from residents for noise pollution and abusive and anarchic occupation of public space by drivers of two-wheelers".

“It is a measure of common sense and of regulation of public space.

The idea is also that a two-wheeler does not remain parked for ten days in the same place.

It is a measure of fairness vis-à-vis motorists.

It is also an ecological measure because scooters also have an exhaust and pollute.

So why would cars pay while two-wheelers would be subject to an exceptional measure?

»Explains Hanna Sebbah, elected from the 16th arrondissement.

The City of Paris estimates there are 100,000 two-wheelers in the capital.

Often cited as a solution to generate more revenue for the city, this paid parking measure would, according to Delphine Bürkli, “finance development and greening projects in public spaces”.

The group's request carried by the mayor of the 9th will be discussed at the Paris Council which opens this Tuesday for three days.

If the wish is voted, however, it will still work on the contours of the measure and especially on the price of this parking.
