Cottbus (AP) - The trial of the accidental death of an Egyptian student in Cottbus is being reopened.

The appeal process at the Cottbus Regional Court begins on February 15th.

The court has set appointments until March, as it announced on Thursday.

In the first trial before the Cottbus District Court, the defendant was sentenced to a youth sentence of one year on probation for negligent homicide a good year ago.

The court saw it as proven that the driver from Dresden had acted grossly negligent to a high degree when he caused the accident on April 15, 2017.

The 22-year-old pedestrian was injured so badly that she died a short time later.

The defendant is accused of having exceeded the maximum speed of 30 kilometers per hour permitted in this traffic area by around 20 kilometers per hour.

If the maximum permitted speed had been adhered to, the fatal consequences could have been avoided, according to the court.

The defense appealed against the judgment of the district court.

The accident had hit the headlines and debated xenophobia.

The public prosecutor's office had also investigated a co-driver of the accused driver - on suspicion of sedition and insult.

He is said to have insulted the injured Egyptian woman with slogans at the scene of the accident.

The proceedings were discontinued because it was not proven that xenophobic and seditious slogans had been uttered, it said.
