Berlin (AP) - Almost half a year after the violent death of a 15-year-old schoolgirl in Berlin, the trial against the alleged murderer begins this morning (9:30 a.m.).

In the proceedings at the regional court of the capital, the 42-year-old German is accused of strangling the girl on a fallow land on the Rummelsburger Bucht on the night of August 5, 2020.

Previously, according to the indictment, he should have tried to rape the drunk 15-year-old.

The defendant is in custody.

According to the police, he had turned himself in.

The victim's mother and sister are co-plaintiffs in the trial.

According to lawyer Christina Clemm, they hope to clarify why the alleged perpetrator was at large.

In addition, they are also concerned with the question of how seriously society takes violence against women, the lawyer at the German Press Agency had said in advance.

It was unclear whether the joint plaintiffs would come to the trial themselves.

According to the court, the accused had already "appeared under criminal law many times".

14 negotiation days are initially planned for the process until mid-March.
