Leipzig (dpa / sn) - The corona pandemic has brought a lot of changes for the students of dentistry at the University of Leipzig.

Like other students, you need to study a lot more online.

But the university is sticking to one thing: training “on the patient” should remain possible even in the corona crisis.

"We try everything that absolutely has to be done in person," said Dean of Studies Prof. Dr.

Sebastian Hahnel.

274 dentistry students are currently enrolled in Leipzig.

The goal of the university is to enable them to graduate without delays despite Corona.

For this, a lot has been rearranged in the dental clinic.

The laboratory work has been shut down.

It is about dental technology.

That is also important, said Hahnel.

But it is even more important that the prospective dentists can safely make a filling or prepare a crown.

The students learn this first from “phantom patients”.

These are dolls that can always be fitted with new bits and whose plastic teeth the students can practice with the drills.

These courses in propaedeutics were quartered, and these quarters were divided again so that the budding dentists could keep enough distance from one another.

This also means that the practice times were extended into the evening.

The hygiene concepts are constantly being adapted to work on real patients, said Hahnel.

“As dentists, we have an increased risk even without Corona.

There is always the possibility of something splashing on the face, which is why we always pay attention to good protection in dentistry. "

Johann Dörschner is one of the students.

There was a real standstill only briefly in spring 2020, he reported.

Since then, the course has progressed, he said.

Every Monday the budding dentists do a corona test.

They have not yet been vaccinated, but that is yet to come.

«Many would like to be vaccinated.

But of course I can understand that it is only the staff of the Corona intensive care units that have their turn. "

Despite the restrictions due to the pandemic, he is not worried about graduating, the 22-year-old said.

"I do not really assume that I will have any problems finding a job."
