This Thursday, the Ministry of the Interior published a “first photograph” of trends for the year 2020. If the number of thefts and burglaries is logically in sharp decline, on the other hand, rape and intra-family violence are in rise.

24,800 rapes recorded by the Ministry of the Interior in 2020. This is 11% more than in 2019, a year which had already seen these figures soar.

The freedom to speak out about sexual assault certainly has a lot to do with it, but we should not neglect the impact of the first confinement during which some couples remained locked up - in isolation - at their home.

Another probable consequence of this isolation: intra-family violence jumped in 2020 by nearly 10%.

Conversely, teleworking and confinement oblige, the number of burglaries drops by 20%.

The French indeed stayed much longer at home, making the task more complicated for thieves.

Ditto for vehicle theft and snatching which are also in sharp decline: with the health crisis, many fewer people circulated in the streets.

The final delinquency figures for the year 2020 will be published next spring, but this first photograph already shows a trend, which should be confirmed in the coming months.
