Rosenheim (dpa / lby) - The examination for the controversial new construction of a railway line in the Bavarian Inn Valley has made a step forward: the regional planning procedure of the government of Upper Bavaria has been completed.

Economy Minister Hubert Aiwanger (FW), Transport Minister Kerstin Schreyer (CSU), Upper Bavaria's District President Maria Els and the DB Group representative Klaus-Dieter Josel want to present the results today in Rosenheim.

According to the government of Upper Bavaria, around 30,000 statements from citizens and around 100 from authorities, institutions and organizations were received on the five suggestions made by Deutsche Bahn for a possible route.

In the next step, it is Deutsche Bahn's turn.

She wants to present a concrete route proposal for the so-called Brenner northern approach in spring.

The arguments from the regional planning procedure should be included here.

The project has met with a lot of resistance in the region.

Most municipalities had rejected all five options.

Some municipalities saw only one variant as possible if necessary: A new line east of Rosenheim would possibly be spatially compatible if it were largely tunneled under.

The opponents - including environmentalists and citizens' groups - are calling for the existing tracks to be modernized instead of building a new one.

The northern approach to the Brenner is to expand the capacity of the future Brenner Base Tunnel, which is being built in Italy and Austria.

This should mean that more goods will come by rail in the future.
