Frankfurt / Berlin (dpa) - The Central Council of Jews in Germany has described the verdict in the Lübcke trial as an “appropriate reaction to this terrible act”.

"The court is sending a clear signal against racism and right-wing extremism," said President Josef Schuster according to a statement on Thursday.

The higher regional court (OLG) Frankfurt had sentenced the main defendant Stephan Ernst to life imprisonment for the murder of the Kassler regional president Walter Lübcke (CDU) and determined the particular gravity of the guilt.

Schuster also emphasized that in the process failures had come to light with the security authorities, which the investigation committee in the Hessian state parliament will investigate.

"It is to be hoped that insights will be gained that make it possible to better illuminate right-wing networks in the future and from which the appropriate consequences can then be drawn."

The state's monopoly of force must never be in question.

Schuster went on to say: "The procedure also made it clear to all of us what a courageous man Walter Lübcke was."

He had shown a clear edge against right-wing extremists and was not intimidated by them.

"He had to pay with his life for that."
