Munich (dpa / lby) - The Munich Cardinal Reinhard Marx donated 50,000 euros to the Regensburg sea rescue organization Sea-Eye.

The money came from the budget of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising for social, charitable and universal church purposes, announced the Archdiocese of Munich on Thursday.

The Archdiocese of Paderborn donated a further 50,000 euros.

The diocese of Trier contributed 25,000 euros.

The money will be used to finance the transfer of the Sea-Eye 4 to the Mediterranean.

According to the announcement, the organization has participated in the rescue of more than 15,000 people since 2015.

The Archdiocese of Munich and Freising is also supporting the sea rescue organization SOS Méditerranée with 50,000 euros from its disaster fund.

In 2018, Marx donated 50,000 euros to the Mission Lifeline sea rescue organization.
