Erfurt (dpa / th) - Thuringia's cities and municipalities want to help with the distribution of free masks, but largely have a free hand from the state.

The administrative effort would have to be limited, said the managing director of the association of municipalities and cities, Ralf Rusch, on Thursday of the German press agency.

It is unrealistic and dubious under data protection law to demand that people submit their Hartz IV notices in order to receive free masks.

"That can't work."

The state government decided on Wednesday evening that a total of around 2.5 million medical masks would be made available free of charge for people with low incomes.

The FFP2 and surgical masks from stocks in the state are to be distributed via the municipalities primarily to recipients of Hartz IV benefits as well as asylum seekers and refugees.

It is about 105,000 people in the Free State.
