Steffenshagen (dpa / mv) - After an accident with two small children, in which four people were injured in the Rostock district on Wednesday, experts are investigating the exact circumstances of the head-on collision.

As a police spokeswoman said on Thursday, not only were the two one and a half year old babies, who are twins, seriously injured, but also their mother.

The 38-year-old's car collided with an oncoming car in the afternoon near Steffenshagen when turning left.

The impact was so severe that a young boy had to be resuscitated by emergency doctors at the scene of the accident.

On Thursday, the health of both children was classified as "seriously injured", as the spokeswoman said.

Both had been in the back of the car.

After initial examinations, the mother wanted to turn left at the accident site in the direction of Wittenbeck.

She probably overlooked the right of way of the oncoming car.

The 36-year-old driver of the other vehicle, who was alone in the car, was also injured in the frontal collision.

All those involved came to a clinic in Rostock.

Both cars had to be towed.
