Brussels (dpa) - Unnecessary trips to and from Belgium are now prohibited.

A corresponding decision by the governments of the country and regions came into force on Wednesday.

Accordingly, vacation and leisure trips are no longer allowed until March 1st.

This is to prevent new corona infections from being carried into the country.

The ban is to be controlled in road, air, ship and rail traffic.

However, there are exceptions.

The movement of goods should continue to flow.

Visits to a spouse or partner, travel for work or study reasons and for funerals of close relatives are also permitted.

"We are not building a wall around our country," Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said on Friday after the decision.

Anyone who makes use of one of the exceptions must fill out a "declaration of honor".

The EU heads of state and government agreed last week to largely slow down travel in the face of particularly feared variants of the corona virus.

However, Belgium goes further with the ban.

The kingdom with 11.5 million inhabitants also wants to preserve its relatively good corona situation.

But here too the number of infections has recently increased again.

According to the Sciensano health department, 252 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants have been registered in the past two weeks - an increase of 12 percent.

In total, there was an average of 2148 cases every day in the past week.

In October there were at times more than 20,000 cases a day.
