Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The upcoming state parliament and mayor elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania can only be carried out as postal votes if the infection rate in the current corona pandemic requires it.

The state parliament in Schwerin decided on Wednesday a necessary amendment to the state and local electoral law.

The government factions of the SPD and CDU as well as the opposition left voted for the new law, the AfD against.

It is intended to ensure that elections can be held in the event of natural disasters or under massive contact restrictions of a pandemic.

The new regulation also enables candidates to be nominated, for example for state elections without regular party conferences.
