In Madrid, the far-right offensive against feminism is continuing.

In exchange for giving their vote to the municipal budget, the far right demands that the conservative mayor withdraw his support for such policies and remove all symbols of this cause.

The latest battle was fought around a 60-meter-long mural depicting famous female figures.

It is a long fresco painted on a cinder block wall that represents the portraits of 15 famous women from around the world.

We see the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, the singer Nina Simone or the Russian cosmonaut Terechkova.

Produced by the inhabitants of this popular district of Madrid, three years ago, this fresco is now in the sights of the conservative city hall of Madrid, which considers that it conveys a political message too to the left.

Juan, an inhabitant of the neighborhood, is dismayed: “

We have seen their intention, it is to transform Madrid into a city with less diversity, less plural on the question of gender.

They want to come back to all these questions.

 "

The policy on gender equality has become the workhorse of the city hall of Madrid.

The municipality has just abolished the delegation responsible for women's equality at the request of

the far-right party Vox

.

For Maria, a resident, who participated in the fresco,

Vox's intentions

are very clear.

They want to make it a political issue by destroying what we have achieved,

” she comments.

It's a way of putting us women aside.

 "

The mobilization of Madrilenians and more than 55,000 signatures to save the fresco forced the town hall to backtrack, but the anti-feminist policy of the Spanish capital is still very much relevant.
