Darmstadt (dpa / lsw) - SV Sandhausen has suffered a serious setback in the relegation battle of the 2nd Bundesliga.

Coach Michael Schiele's team lost 1: 2 (1: 1) at SV Darmstadt 98 on Wednesday evening despite an early lead. Defender Aleksandr Zhirov scored after just over 30 seconds for SVS, midfielder Marvin Mehlem turned the game with a brace (36th and 48th minute) but still in favor of the hosts.

In the table, Sandhausen is in 17th place after the first matchday of the second half of the season.

After their dream start, the guests failed to add the second goal - and Darmstadt improved after half an hour.

First Tobias Kempe (31st) only hit the crossbar, then Mehlem from eleven meters into the left corner to equalize.

Shortly after the change, Mehlem added more.

The home side later recorded a second crossbar hit by Fabian Schnellhardt and with luck survived the stormy final offensive of the guests.
