Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - Hesse's state parliament president Boris Rhein (CDU) has called for the fight against anti-Semitism and racism in society.

"Anyone who wants a liberal, livable country has to stand up, must stand up against anti-Semitism and racism in every form," said Rhein on Wednesday on the occasion of the commemoration day for the victims of National Socialism, according to a speech that was distributed in advance.

"We want to and we must not tolerate that in our country."

Almost 76 years after the end of the Second World War, not everything has been told about the National Socialist terror, the Shoah and the mass murder of millions of people, the President of the State Parliament warned.

"The truth is: We know far too little," emphasized Rhein.

"And by the way - we know this - just 0.5 percent of those who worked in extermination camps were held accountable by the German judiciary."

It is not enough just to remember the crimes of that time, said the President of the State Parliament.

In view of the growing anti-Semitism and racism in society, the citizens should also be actively involved.

"It is high time to overcome the culture of indifference."

January 27th has been a national day of remembrance in Germany since 1996 as the “Day of Remembrance of the Victims of National Socialism”.

It commemorates the liberation of the survivors of the German concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz on January 27, 1945 by soldiers of the Red Army.

The National Socialists and their helpers murdered six million Jews during the Second World War.

In Auschwitz alone, the Nazis killed more than a million people, mostly Jews.

Many were gassed, and the bodies were then cremated.
