Berlin (dpa / bb) - The committee that is supposed to review the doctoral thesis of Federal Family Minister Franziska Giffey (SPD) met for the first time last Monday.

The Free University (FU) announced on Wednesday.

"The members were informed of the status quo, accepted the test order and agreed on the next procedural steps."

According to the FU, the names of the members of the committee should not be made public "in order not to endanger the confidential cooperation in the process".

Giffey, who is now the SPD state chairman and the leading candidate for the House of Representatives election in September, asked Freie Universität in February 2019 to review its dissertation “Europe's way to the citizen - the European Commission's policy for the participation of the Civil society ».

The university complied.

In October 2019, the Presidium of the FU Giffey issued a complaint about deficiencies in the work, but did not withdraw her doctorate.

Last November, the FU announced that it would review the doctoral thesis again.

The politician had declared that she would not use the title.

According to the FU, a review committee was set up in January by the responsible doctoral committee of the Political and Social Sciences department to carry out the review.

The result of the re-examination is likely to be delayed.

This results from the answer of the Berlin Science Administration to a written request from the CDU parliamentary group in the Berlin House of Representatives, which became known on January 20th.

It says: "According to the current assessment of the Free University of Berlin, it will hardly be possible to graduate during the lecture period in the 2020/2021 winter semester."

The university management announced in mid-November that it wanted to conclude the procedure within this period if possible.
