Kiel (dpa / lno) - Education Minister Karin Prien and the Commissioner for Jewish Life and Against Anti-Semitism, Peter Harry Carstensen, (both CDU) have called for memories of the Holocaust to be kept alive even in the corona pandemic.

"We should pause, take the time to remember those who were murdered by a criminal regime that had lost all humanity," said Prien on Wednesday on January 27, Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Even if in view of the pandemic it is not possible to remember and warn as in the past, it should not be forgotten.

«We are not sure about democracy, freedom and human rights.

We have to work on it all the time. "

Carstensen said, "Today we commemorate the 76th anniversary of the liberation of the survivors of the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp and the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust".

Because of Corona, commemoration faces a special challenge.

"All the more, every citizen of our country is asked to pause for a moment and commemorate the immeasurably shameful deeds and crimes of the Nazi era."

Everyone can make a contribution.

"Be it caring for the stumbling blocks in front of the front door, lighting a candle or dealing with the story and introducing it to family or friends."
