Frankfurt (dpa / lhe) - A symbolic date and a gesture for the present too: Since Wednesday, the three large multi-purpose rooms in the Frankfurt Police Headquarters have been named after police officers who resisted the regime during National Socialism.

"At that time, they committed themselves to humanity and democracy even under the most adverse conditions and at risk of death, and with their exemplary actions they represent all upright police officers during the Nazi era," said Police President Gerhard Bereswill about the police officers Ferdinand Mührdel, Otto Kaspar and Christian Fries.

January 27 is the International Day of Remembrance for the victims of National Socialist rule.

The multi-purpose rooms are usually the "social heart" of the police headquarters, where many police officers and guests have the opportunity to learn something about the namesake, Bereswill justified the names.

At the same time, he emphasized that the three police officers were exceptional in their time - a large number of the police officers complied with the National Socialists and that the police were a key instrument of power.

Therefore, an exhibition about the police in the Nazi state will be shown in the police headquarters until March.

A book about the Frankfurt police under National Socialism, which was also presented on Wednesday, is to be made available to all departments.

All this is also part of the measures after a chat group with right-wing extremist content in a Frankfurt police station and the NSU 2.0 threats to the Frankfurt lawyer Seda Basay-Yildiz and the left-wing politician Janine Wissler, among others, became known.

"We are also not completely immune to right-wing extremist ideas," said Bereswill about suspected cases within the Hessian police.

"Right-wing extremist and racist suspicions within the police, right-wing terrorist attacks like the one in Hanau on February 19, 2020 and the right-wing extremist ideas that are spreading in society are worrying."
