Two wolves were still missing on Tuesday evening in the Pyrénées-Orientales.

Four had escaped from their enclosures, during the night from Sunday to Monday.

The day before, six male wolves from a zoo in Latvia had arrived at the Ecozonia animal park, under construction in Cases de Pène, about fifteen kilometers from Perpignan.

According to the last report of the prefecture, Tuesday evening, "two wolves were controlled by being anesthetized in the enclosure of the park" and two others had to be slaughtered "for security reasons".

However, one of them was outside the animal park, said the prefecture.

Any new introduction of animals is suspended

Research, carried out by the teams of the park and the gendarmerie, is still in progress, to try to find the trace of the two remaining animals.

"Taking into account the genetic risk of hybridization and also to avoid damage to wild fauna and herds, the doctrine of the French Office for Biodiversity provides for their neutralization if it is not possible to capture them alive," continues Prefecture.

Teleanesthesia is always preferred.

»Trap cages have been installed.

Any report must be reported to the Pyrenees-Orientales gendarmerie.

In addition, the prefecture indicates that a "detailed report [on the escape of wolves] has been requested from the operator and any new introduction of animals is suspended pending an expertise of the safety of the installations" .
