Berlin / Schwerin (dpa / mv) - People in need of care in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have to dig deeper and deeper into their own pockets for home places.

According to calculations by the Association of Substitute Funds (vdek), the monthly contribution to the home costs at the beginning of the year in the northeast was an average of 1622 euros.

That was 180 euros more than a year before.

This accelerated the increase in costs.

At the beginning of 2020, the burden for those affected and their relatives was 74 euros higher than a year earlier.

Despite the recent rise in costs, home places in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are still considered affordable in a country comparison.

On a national average, the monthly additional payment per care place is 2068 euros.

The most expensive places in homes are in North Rhine-Westphalia with an average of 2460 euros per month, which are claimed as a personal contribution.

The lowest co-payments are required in Saxony-Anhalt with an average of 1465 euros.

The sums include the co-payments for care and support, accommodation, meals, investments by the home operator and a training contribution.

For years, the left in the Schwerin state parliament has been calling for a lowering of the own shares and a fundamental restructuring of the financing.

For the session of the state parliament on Thursday, she submitted another application aimed at capping the subsidies.

Fractional leader Simone Oldenburg pointed out that the average pension in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is around 1200 euros a month and that there is often nothing left for those in need of care.

“Even though you've worked a lifetime, in the end there's nothing left for the little extras that make up life,” she said.

The Left advocates that the country take over the investment costs in full.

This alone would reduce the co-payments of the home residents by about a third, said Oldenburg.

But the goal must be to finance home costs through full care insurance.

Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn (CDU) is aiming for a care reform to cap the co-payments to 700 euros for a maximum of 36 months.

According to the information, around 20,000 people live in nursing homes in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
