The Secretary-General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, announced the day before yesterday that he had spoken to the US President, Joe Biden, about preparing for the next NATO summit, and he also discussed with him the challenges that include: terrorism, Russia, and China.

Stoltenberg praised Biden's "focus on rebuilding alliances," according to a statement by NATO, after four years during which President Donald Trump has been criticizing long-standing alliances.

Stoltenberg stressed that "NATO is the place where Europeans and Americans meet every day, and together we can meet the challenges that none of us can face alone."

The alliance added, in its statement, that Stoltenberg and Biden "have agreed to work together, to prepare for the NATO summit in Brussels later this year, where the leaders will take decisions that make our strong alliance stronger."

The statement stated that they discussed common challenges, such as: "Combating international terrorism, including in Afghanistan and Iraq, and dealing with Russia, which is working to enhance its presence, and with the effects of China's rise on our security."

The two sides pledged to cooperate to tackle climate change and the "Covid-19" epidemic, and called for maintaining "the momentum to increase defense spending."

The next NATO summit is scheduled to take place at NATO headquarters in Brussels, but the timing depends on the circumstances of the epidemic.

Charles Michel, President of the European Council, also suggested that Biden organize a private meeting with all the leaders of the European Union.

Since NATO and the European Union are both based in Brussels, the idea, according to a diplomat, is to organize these two meetings at the same time.
