January 27, 2021The intervention of the Guarantor for the protection of personal data to protect minors on social networks widens after the case of the girl from Palermo and the blockade imposed on Tik Tok.

The Authority yesterday opened a file on Facebook and Instagram.

In recent days, some press articles reported the news that the minor would have several profiles open on the two social networks.

The Authority asked Facebook, which controls Instagram, to provide a series of information, starting with how many and which profiles the minor had and, if this circumstance were confirmed, on how it was possible, for a child under 10 years, to sign up.

Above all, the Guarantor asked to provide precise indications on how to register for the two social networks and on the age checks of the user adopted to check compliance with the minimum registration age.

Facebook will have to reply to the Guarantor within 15 days.

The verification of the Authority will also be extended to other social networks, in particular with regard to the methods of access to the platforms by minors.

Facebook: we will cooperate fully

"In this tragic moment, our deepest condolences go to the child's family. Security and privacy are the highest priorities for Facebook and Instagram. We will cooperate fully with the Italian Data Protection Authority."

Thus a spokesperson for Facebook commented on the file opened by the Guarantor after the case of the girl from Palermo.
